GG Burger, Price: $3.50
Sometimes a single beef patty on a burger just doesn’t make the cut. At GG Burger, you can get up to five beef, pork or chicken patties piled on top each other. The menu items seemed to have been designed by a weed-smoking gamer, with names such as “Pineapple Express” and “Super Mario Shrooms”. Charcoal black buns are also offered, but rest assured, they taste like normal bread: the colour comes from the black flour.
Sovanna Shopping Mall, #17 Street 271 11am-9pm OR 1st floor of Pencil Supermarket opposite the Cambodiana Hotel. 11am-9pm

Meat and Drink, Price: $8
Gastropub Meat and Drink, owned by the Kiwi brothers behind Bar.Sito and Public House, serves up all kinds of burgers: spicy chicken, veggie, fish. They’re all good. But the Ozzy burger complete with the core four ingredients – bacon, egg, beef, cheddar cheese – easily comes top. It’s big but made with care: each layer is fresh. The Australian meat is succulent and sweet after cooking on the barbecue and the bread crisp. Betroot adds extra flavour and a kick.
Meat and Drink is located on the alleyway off Street 308, behind Seibur. Closed Mondays.

The Exchange, Price: $8.50
The Exchange Restaurant and Bar near Wat Phnom offers a flame-grilled black angus burger ($8.50) featuring a thick slab of Australian beef patty (cooked to personal specifications) topped with onion confit and swiss cheese. The patty’s juicy, but not so much that the burger becomes a sloppy mess. Crisp lettuce and fresh, ripe tomato slices top off the package which is served alongside some of the best potato chips in Phnom Penh: thick and crispy, with a soft centre. A perfect accompaniment to a boozy lunch.
The Exchange, #28 Street 47. 10am - midnight.

Digby’s, Price: $8.50
BKK’s Digby’s is well-known among Phnom Penh’s expat community for the selection of meat in its butchery. It’s fitting, then, that the restaurant serves up pretty impressive burgers. The bacon-cheeseburger is enough to satisfy a hearty appetite, stacked with a juicy beef patty, decent cheese and bacon so crispy it snaps with each bite. Salad (with gherkins) adds a fresh element. It’s served with masses of thinly cut French Fries, and a small bowl of tomato ketchup.
Digby’s, #34A Street 306. Corner, Street 63. Open every day 7am - 10pm. Sundays 8am - 3pm

Deco, Price: $12
Similar to The Exchange’s offering, Deco serves up a generous-sized gourmet burget topped with onion confit. However, the cheese here is finely melted rather than flabby and square. The meat is poached in its own juices in a sealed bag to the precise temperature required. The result is a dripping delight, crispy on the outside but luxuriously pink and soft inside. The burger is served with remoulade sauce on the side and a stack of triple-fried chips – as good as they sound.
Deco, #46 Street 352. Monday to Saturday: 12pm- 2pm lunch, 6pm-10pm dinner. Sundays dinner only.
