Hong Kong trade office invited to Cambodian infrastructure push

Minister of Public Works and Transportation Sun Chanthol expressed hope that the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) would lend a hand in an ambitious 10-year development push, involving hundreds of logistics and infrastructure projects worth a total of around $50 billion.

This comes after a meeting on June 16 between the minister and a delegation led by HKETO Bangkok director Lee Sheung-yuen, in which Lee voiced interest in the progress and positive changes made in Cambodian infrastructure development.

The meeting was held to shine light on the development push, as defined in the Logistics Master Plan, for the network of Hong Kong trade offices to identify and evaluate investment and other opportunities in Cambodia.

Chanthol reflected on recent accomplishments such as the 37- and 38-road projects in Preah Sihanouk and Siem Reap provinces, respectively, and the preparation of the Logistics Master Plan.

He also noted the benefits stemming from membership in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, with many infrastructure projects under its umbrella, such as Cambodia’s first-ever expressway, which connects the capital to the coastal Sihanoukville.

The minister underscored that HKETO’s involvement in the Kingdom’s multi-billion-dollar development push would “contribute to the promotion of excellence in logistics competitiveness and transportation in Cambodia”.

Lee also took the occasion to tout the experiences as well as “good” practices and undertakings assumed by his team involving management and specialist expertise at world-class ports, and other vital areas.
