Public Works and Transport Minister Sun Chanthol highlighted the importance of the Dang Tong Port in Koh Kong province, as he attended the June 23 launch of the facility. He noted that it would contribute to connectivity and expand the Kingdom’s marine transportation links.
He described the new port as adding to the Kingdom’s arterial transport networks, linking many different sectors and contributing to poverty reduction.
Chanthol said that the government, via his ministry as administration, is undertaking many other infrastructure projects, including national and provincial roads, expressways, express railway, underground railway and an elevated train project in Phnom Penh, among others.
Koh Kong provincial governor Mithona Phuthong told the assembled guests that the main focus of the Dang Tong Port would be tourism, although it would also handle some cargo. It would not only connect the four coastal provinces of the Kingdom, but also the three neighbouring countries of Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam.
The port is located in Smach Meanchey commune of Khemarak Phumin town. The facility, which features a modern Khmer style, was designed by a Cambodian architect, and was built to international standards to ensure it will stand for a long time.
The port, which cost an estimated $1.5 million, is 115m in length, with a width of 16.6m. With a depth of up to 8m, it can handle vessels of up to 2,000 tonnes.
