Tech to take centre stage in tourism

The Ministry of Tourism has unveiled its strategy for the future, earmarking 15 technologies to drive tourism products and services by 2030.

On 19 August, the tourism ministry spotlighted its commitment to new technologies, including online sales, imaging, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

These innovations, with IoT leading the charge, promise to reshape the travel sector.

With an emphasis on personalisation, security, and efficiency, this could be a game-changer for airlines, hotels, and cruises.

“This selection underpins our vision for short to long-term strategies in delivering world-class services,” read the ministry’s statement.

Chhay Sivlin, president of the Cambodian Association of Travel Agents, voiced her support the next day.

“Embracing these technologies is crucial as Cambodia aims to match global technological advancements in tourism,” she noted.

Sivlin further emphasised the government’s recognition of technology as a foundational element across all economic sectors.

With the ever-competitive landscape of tourism, especially against neighbouring countries, the emphasis is on leveraging technology to attract global tourists.

Not only do these technologies streamline tourist experiences, but they also enhance safety and service quality.

Sivlin believes that this will place Cambodia favourably in comparison to other countries.

“The ministry’s tech-driven approach serves as a guide for tourism professionals. Many people in both the public and private sectors might not be fully aware of these advancements,” Sivlin explained.

She concluded, “This initiative presents a golden opportunity for tour operators to evolve, ensuring their services remain at the cutting edge of what technology can offer”.
