“Out of sight, out of mind!” This was an adage back in the day when seeing someone meant having to see them in person. However, this adage no longer applies, as technology has brought friends, family and lovers closer than ever, bridging the distance when someone close is living in another country or even another continent. Today, you are only as far away as a computer or mobile phone screen.
Lovers who before would worry about living far apart can now talk with and even see each other anytime they want.
Mao Odam, 25, is pursuing his master’s degree in Indonesia while his girlfriend, Vin Monyroth, 24, is working as an accountant in Cambodia. They have maintained their love for nearly a year by utilising modern technology to stay in touch.
Odam said: “To preserve our relationship, we are now using Facebook, Viber, Line and Skype. I always chat and talk to her every day. Whenever I get texts from her, I feel very happy and warm.”
“These applications are very important for me and my girlfriend because they strengthen our love. If it weren’t for this technology, we would have no other way to communicate and stay in touch.”
He also highlighted that these new tools of communication help make his relationship closer and sweeter.
“It is a way to keep our love constant when we are far apart. And it also helps us not miss each other so much.”
Although this technology-savvy couple appreciates communication via modern technology, Odam still believes that nothing can compare to real-world, face-to-face communication because he can show and share everything with his girlfriend.
