Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, is set to meet with Prime Minister Hun Sen and Cambodia’s top diplomat Prak Sokhonn, who is also the ASEAN special envoy on Myanmar, during his visit to attend the 55th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) and related meetings in Phnom Penh.
Borrell will attend the annual ASEAN-EU Ministerial Meeting as well as the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Ministerial Meeting, as part of the August 3-5 AMM hosted by Cambodia, with bilateral meetings slated to take place on the sidelines.
“The bilateral discussions will focus on post-pandemic recovery, Russia’s war against Ukraine and its global implications, regional cooperation and the worrying developments in Myanmar, as well as work to deepen EU relations with Cambodia, which holds the ASEAN Chairmanship this year,” said the European External Action Service late on August 3.
The statement said that during the meetings, EU and ASEAN will adopt a new EU-ASEAN Plan of Action, which sets out a wide range of areas slated for deeper cooperation over the next five years (2023-2027). They include pandemic recovery, trade, rules-based and sustainable connectivity, climate change, research, and security.
The meetings will also touch on preparations for the first-ever EU-ASEAN Commemorative Summit involving all 27 EU member states, to be held in December in Brussels, Belgium.
