Angkor Wat's Bakan Tower gets needed facelift

The Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology under the APSARA National Authority (ANA) is proceeding with the third stage of a project aimed at reinforcing the weakened structure of Angkor Wat's Bakan Tower.

The project's architect and supervisor, Kham Mony, said the third stage of the Bakan Tower consolidation, located at the southeast corner of Angkor Wat, commenced on April 12. Divided into six sections, this phase has already seen the corners in two locations reach 40 per cent completion.

In elaboration, Mony noted that each location required new stones due to a lack of existing ones. To fortify the structure, they also worked on the stairs. Original stones, once located, were reinstalled. Furthermore, the team managed to repair damaged stones, eliminate stone-decaying soil, reinforce the inner laterite and seal leaks.
