Temperatures between the end of March and late May are expected to be above average and reach a high of 42 Celsius this year, the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology announced on Thursday.
People were warned to take care of their health in the hot conditions, as this year’s El Nino weather event is predicted to raise temperatures by one and two degrees nationwide during what is already Cambodia’s hottest period.
“Temperatures are to be between one and two Celsius higher than average this year. This is caused by the northeast monsoon creating low pressure and is part of the El Nino phenomenon. By the end of March to late May, the highest temperatures will be around 40-42 Celsius and that will lead to hot and stuffy conditions."
“During this time, normal monthly rainfall will almost cease and the arrival of the rainy season will be pushed back by more than a week,” Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology spokesman Chan Yutha told The Post on Thursday.
He appealed to farmers to use water economically to lessen the effects of any shortages. He reiterated that the practice of cultivating dry-season rice twice a year should be halted as water would likely become scarce.
The heat could cause a spike in respiratory problems, something old people and children are especially vulnerable to, said Banteay Meancheay provincial health department head Keo Sopheaktra, who recommended people take measures to stay healthy.
“The hot, stuffy conditions could bring health concerns, especially respiratory problems. So people should not travel far during the day unless absolutely necessary. People need to take care, especially by drinking plenty of water,” he said.
