Cambodia planning new border checkpoint at Thma Da

Cambodia is looking into the possibility of opening a new Thma Da Border Checkpoint with Thailand to boost trade and tourism.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport said on December 4 that Minister of Public Works and Transport Sun Chanthol led a technical working group to study the possibility of opening the checkpoint which would be located in Thma Da commune of Pursat province’s Veal Veng district, which borders Thailand’s Trat province.

“The goal is opening another border crossing between Cambodia and Thailand to increase trade and tourism between the two countries,” the ministry said.

They said that many people in the western part of the country including some investors wish to have the checkpoint constructed and opened soon because the closure is interfering with their livelihoods by inhibiting trade with Thailand.

As per the usual plans, the ministry said the checkpoint will be constructed with an immigration office building, customs and excise building and administrative building so that it is equipped to inspect cross-border transport of goods and keep track of people’s movements in and out of the country, among other things.
