In Preah Sihanouk province on July 8, authorities incinerated over two tonnes of illegal drugs seized from traffickers. These substances were accumulated from Preah Sihanouk, Kampot, and Kampong Speu provinces.
The event was led by Keng Somarith, secretary of state at the Ministry of Justice, Meas Vyrith, secretary general of the National Authority for Combating Drugs (NACD), and Kuoch Chamroen, Preah Sihanouk provincial governor, amongst an assembly of other officials in attendance.
Sieng Sok, the prosecutor for Preah Sihanouk provincial court, relayed at the event that the drugs stemmed from 71 cases in Preah Sihanouk province amounting to over two tonnes, 216 cases in Kampong Speu province with 92 kilograms, and 107 cases in Kampot involving just one kilogram.
Kuoch Camroeun applauded the joint efforts of enforcement officials in battling drug crimes and preventing such offences.
As per the NACD, Cambodia cracked down on more than 3,100 drug cases in the first half of this year, confiscating close to 840 kilograms of drugs and detaining nearly 7,500 suspects nationwide.
Several of these cases merely involved the transit of substances from one country to another, while some pertained to distribution within the country itself.
