CNRP to oppose lifting of members’ immunity

The opposition plans to attend the National Assembly’s Standing Committee meeting today to debate the lifting of immunity for two of its lawmakers.

Opposition lawmaker Eng Chhay Eang said he and Yem Ponhearith will put forth their arguments opposing the lifting of Tok Vanchan and Pin Ratana’s immunity, adding that a positive outcome could signal the opposition’s return to parliament.

The lawmakers are currently under investigation for “procurement of prostitution” in a case related to CNRP acting president Kem Sokha’s alleged sex scandal.

The Standing Committee is considering a request made by the Justice Ministry on June 30 to strip the two of their parliamentary immunity so they can be charged.
