Kampot provincial police are on a manhunt for three suspects after a French tourist reported that she was raped in the early hours of Friday.
Hor Vanna, Kampot town police chief, told The Post on Monday that the woman is 43 years old and was visiting the town while on holiday in the Kingdom.
She initially reported the incident to the police on Saturday afternoon, saying she was gang-raped by three Cambodian men.
Vanna said police were now searching for the three suspects and waiting for further clarification from the victim on the exact location where she encountered the men.
He continued that police had checked CCTV from the night in question but were yet to find any footage of the attack.
“The victim doesn’t remember the incident clearly as she had been drinking, but we are still trying to assist her,” Vanna said.
He said the victim told police that she was walking home at around 3am when three men in a car offered her a lift, which she accepted. She was then attacked, with the ordeal lasting until 5am.
Provincial coordinator for Rights group Licadho, Opsovan Chan Thorn, said the attack could deter foreign women tourists from visiting the province.
“This is a first – cases of raping foreign tourists [in Kampot town] have never occurred previously,” he said.
