Girl still missing after storm sinks local ferry

A 2-year-old girl who disappeared on Wednesday when a ferry crossing the Mekong capsized during an afternoon storm in Kandal province’s Lvea Em district, remained missing yesterday.

Tina Youseang was one of two people missing after the incident, which claimed the life of 53-year-old farmer Chheun Ko.

The other missing person – Sun Kimly, the boat’s driver – disappeared after the boat sank, but Koh Keo commune police chief Khut Chorn said witnesses had reported the 32-year-old made it ashore and fled on a motodop.

Chorn said passengers on the boat, which was carrying 12 people, had requested between $500 and $5,000 in compensation.

However, the father of the missing girl, Tina Youseang, said he would not consider filing a claim until he found his daughter’s body. Chorn said divers had located the boat on the riverbed but had so far not been able to retrieve it.

The same storms on Wednesday also caused a road to collapse near a huge construction site around Olympic Stadium.

Touch Samnang, deputy CEO of the Overseas Cambodia Investment Corporation, which is overseeing the construction, yesterday said the sinkhole – which swallowed three cars – was not caused by the excavation being carried out by the company just metres from where the collapse occurred.

He said, however, that OCIC would help City Hall repair the hole – which was filled with earth yesterday – lest the company be blamed.
