Group to look into illegal checkpoints

An interminiserial working group will study illegal border checkpoints and report its findings to Minister of Interior Sar Kheng, according to a document in the most recent Royal Gazette.

The group will be headed by Ministry of Interior Secretary of State Ouk Kimlek, according to the announcement signed by Prime Minister Hun Sen on January 31. Ministry of Interior Undersecretary of State Bun Honn will serve as deputy head.

Kheng has called numerous times for a crackdown on unauthorised entry points into to the country.

San Chey, country director of NGO Affiliated Network for Social Accountability, said corruption and bribery scandals involving police, military and customs officials at the border have proliferated despite attempts to crack down.

“A lot of investigations were made. A lot of reports were heard . . . But the problem is still there,” Chey said.

Officials from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Immigration Department and the border police will also join the group.
