A man was shot in Siem Reap’s Puok district when a group of armed robbers broke into a home-front grocery store on Wednesday night making away with $13,000 in cash and other valuables, according to local police.

District police chief Tep Pumsen said that three suspects armed with AK-47s and a handgun came in through the unlocked back door of the home while the family was counting money.

“The thieves tied up all the members of the family before collecting all the money in the house,” about $13,000 in riel, US dollars, and Thai baht, in addition to jewellery and other items, according to Pumsen.

He said that before leaving, one of the thieves shot the cousin of the owner of the house in the leg.

The authorities were hunting for the armed robbers and the victim was now recovering at the district hospital, he said.

Meanwhile three men suspected of committing an armed robbery in Kratie’s Snuol district on Tuesday, in which a man was shot dead, were apprehended yesterday, according to Kratie provincial police deputy chief Om Phy.

Provincial and district police arrested Leng Vy, 37, and Leng Eun, 34, in Mondulkiri’s Keo Seima district, seizing an AK-47 and 12 cartridges. Suspect Sren Lang, 34, was caught in Kratie by provincial military police.

According to Phy, the three accused may face up to 30 years’ imprisonment if found guilty.
