The Ministry of Labour co-hosted a training session with the Singaporean Ministry of Manpower yesterday on factory boiler safety.
The workshops come after a year with several boiler explosions at garment factories that have killed at least three people and injured dozens.
Leng Tong, director of the Occupational Health and Safety Department at the Ministry of Labour, said officials are paying close attention to training after the deaths.
“We just want to think about the safety of the people,” Tong said. “They need to regularly check their boilers, operators need to get training and monitor daily whether there are any irregularities.”
The three-day training session targets inspectors in the ministries of labour, industry, environment and mines.
“We did not invite the garment factories for the training because it is training for the ministry level. When they gain the knowledge, they will do the training later,” Tong said.
The inspectors will be educated on new guidelines issued by the Ministry of Industry and Handicrafts earlier this year, Tong said.
