National Commission meets to review clemency requests

National Commission meets to review clemency requests

Minister of Justice Koeut Rith chaired a meeting of the National Commission to Review and Request Sentence Reductions and Pardons on October 6 for prisoners who asked for sentence reductions and pardons for the upcoming Water Festival.

Ministry of Justice spokesperson Kim Santepheap said that the National Commission received documents from 24 correctional centres in the capital and provinces asking for sentence reductions and pardons for 683 prisoners, including 64 females.

“A total of 683 prisoners asked for sentence reductions and pardons. Of that number, 626 (55 females) asked that their prison sentences be reduced and 57 (nine females) asked for pardons,” he continued.

He also said that the National Commission had already reviewed the total list the same day. The commission is also continuing to prepare documents for submission to Prime Minister Hun Sen and in turn Hun Sen will request that the King grant pardons to the prisoners.

The Water Festival is set to take place on November 7-9, but the prime minister called off the festival in Phnom Penh due to the ASEAN Summit. However, the Water Festival will still take place in the provinces.
