One dead, 12 injured as van slams into tuk-tuk

A 20-year-old woman was killed and another 12 people injured after a van rear-ended a heavily laden tuk-tuk on Phnom Penh’s Russian Boulevard on Sunday evening.

Choam Chao commune police chief Theng Kosal said yesterday that Van Sreytheng, 20, died at the scene of the crash at about 10:15pm in Por Sen Chey district, while her sister, Van Sreylin, 22, was sent to hospital with a broken leg. Another 10 passengers were injured, including the tuk-tuk driver, he added.

Kosal said the driver of the van fled the scene, but his vehicle was impounded by traffic police along with the tuk-tuk.

The body of Sreytheng, who had been staying in rented accommodation in the commune, has been transferred to Sambor Meas pagoda in her home province of Kampong Cham for collection by her family, Kosal said.

He added that other victims were taken to Preah Kossamak Hospital by ambulance, while two were taken to Hong Hak private clinic for treatment.
