More than 100 units of unexploded ordnances (UXO) were found by villagers in two districts and handed over to the Battambang provincial authorities for further action.
In Koas Krala district, police chief Pang Hieng said on April 30 that a farmer in Chhnal Moan commune's Prey Toteung village found the UXO at two different locations while ploughing his farmland and then reported it to local authorities.
“At both locations, there were 94 UXO units, around 70 per cent of which have degraded as they are remnants of war,” Hieng said.
He said most of the UXO units are M79 rounds and hand grenades. Chhan Moan commune police had contacted demining NGO Halo Trust Cambodia to collect them for destruction.
Hieng noted that there had been a mine explosion incident in recent weeks, when a tractor drove over an anti-tank mine, killing one person.
In a separate case in Bavel district, a resident of Kbal Spean village in Lvea commune found a cluster of 30 UXO units. Lvea commune police collected and handed them over to the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC), according to the National Police website.
