PM calls for vigilance in Khmer New Year greetings

Prime Minister Hun Sen reminded authorities and armed forces to be mindful in maintaining security and public order as people travel across the country during the Khmer New Year holiday from April 14-16.

The premier, himself spending his New Year holiday in the coastal province of Preah Sihanouk, made the call in a Facebook post on the night of April 13. “Be mindful in protecting security and public order and easing traffics at pagodas, events and all tourist attractions.”

He recalled that the Khmer New Year had not been celebrated in the last two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“To our compatriots, please enjoy our traditional Khmer New Year!”

Hun Sen commended state institutions and some provinces for organising Songkran event to bring joy for the people during the holiday. While wishing the people a happy new year and safe travel during the holiday, the premier called on them to respect the traffic law and remain vigilant to protect themselves from the coronavirus.

“May the New Year deity, Keriny Tevy, bless all Cambodian people and may us all be blessed with happiness and good heart to unite as one Khmer family in the Angkor motherland for the sake of independence, peace, freedom, sovereignty and prosperity ,” he wrote.
