Preah Sihanouk provincial authorities are running a series of training courses on water rescue for the life guards of each of the province’s tourist beaches. With the assistance of the Thai embassy, the workshops began on March 13.
Provincial deputy governor Mang Sineth said the training courses – “Water Rescue to strengthen tourists’ safety in Preah Sihanouk province” – would run through March 17.
Sineth said he believed that the training would help develop Thai-Cambodian relationships further, while also strengthening the capacity of provincial lifeguards.
“There are 18 state lifeguards, stationed at popular beaches like Independence, Ochheuteal and Otres. The training will also be attended by 30 additional guards, who are all employed in the private sector,” he said.
“Although they are working for private companies, they play a big part in keeping tourists safe on the beaches. In addition, they are prepared to assist when a vessel is sinking, whether a tourist craft or a fishing boat,” he added.
Thai ambassador Cherdkiat Atthakor addressed the March 13 opening ceremony of the training.
“These workshops are very important for economic development at the provincial and national levels. Reducing the risks to the lives of visitors will boost tourism in coastal provinces, in accordance with the Thailand-Cambodia ‘Two Kingdoms, One Destination’ policy. It will also enhance Preah Sihanouk’s readiness to host water sports as part of the 32nd SEA Games,” he said.
According to the provincial administration, Cambodia and Thailand are also working together in other areas, including tourism marketing, trade, health and education.
