Phnom Penh Muni-cipal Hall has given notice of an expected 45 days of congestion from mid-September during construction at the intersection of Russian and Mao Tse-Tung boulevards in Tuol Kork district, asking for understanding from those affected.
The plans will see pillars on the Techno flyover bridge installed, with authorities hoping to bring improved driving conditions to the area.
“After this period of construction, traffic will be open as usual and a better, new traffic system will be implemented,” said a statement from Municipal Hall.
Long Dimanche, Phnom Penh Municipal spokesman, confirmed that the pillar installations will influence traffic flow until the end of October, but that people will still be able to travel on the route.
However, he called on drivers to exercise greater vigilance while using the roads during the construction phase.
“People should pay more attention, because they could unconsciously hit the bridge pillars, which we use to support the structure,” he said.
The Techno flyover project is the capital’s fourth flyover and includes a 346-metre tunnel under the Russian Boulevard, connecting Mao Tse-tung to Kim Il Sung Boulevard.
The bridge construction, undertaken by the Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation, was opened last week by Prime Minister Hun Sen and is anticipated to last 16 months and cost some $14 million.
