Russia supports school meal system

Russia has provided $2.8 million as part of the UN World Food Programme funding to support the implementation of a sustainable school food system development project in Cambodia.

In a press release on January 19, the Russian embassy in Phnom Penh said the move had been aimed at strengthening cooperation in the interests of post-Covid-19 recovery and sustainable development.

“The Russian Federation provided $2.8 million as part of the targeted contribution to the fund of the UN World Food Programme to finance expenditures connected with the realisation of projects aimed at the development of sustainable school meals systems in the Kingdom of Cambodia,” it said.

In October last year, the embassy – together with Russian BioBuilding Co, eBiodis, Leisure Asia Corporation, SGU Import Export, and the Cambodia-Russia Trade House – held a humanitarian action in the Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital.

During the ceremony, Russian ambassador Anatoly Borovik handed the hospital’s director, Ngy Meng, a wide range of medical equipment to aid in the fight against Covid-19.

In December, Borovik also met with Alissar Chaker, permanent representative of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) in Phnom Penh, at the Russian embassy where they discussed social and humanitarian projects implemented in Cambodia by the UNDP in Phnom Penh, as well as projects supported by Russia.

Nikolai Patrushev, secretary of the security council of the Russian Federation, visited Cambodia the same month to discuss further plans for Russian-Cambodian cooperation in political, economic and scientific dimensions, as well as on a wide range of security issues.

At the Russia-ASEAN Summit in late October last year, ASEAN leaders considered ways to expand political, economic and humanitarian ties, exchanged views on the situation in the Asia-Pacific region and discussed recovery issues of the Asia-Pacific economy and overcoming the consequences of the pandemic.

Russia reaffirmed that it has been and remains a close friend of Cambodia as well as a well-trusted partner who is committed to strengthening bilateral relations and preserving the peace, stability and prosperity of the people of the Kingdom.
