Search continues for victims of ferry sinking

Prime Minister Hun Sen shared his condolences with the bereaved families whose children passed away when a ferry sank in Kampong Phnom commune in Kandal province’s Leuk Dek district on the night of October 13.

Kandal provincial police said today that the bodies of eight victims have been recovered following the sinking, which took place at 7pm.

“On the morning of October 14, two more bodies were found,” said the police.

The authorities are continuing to search for the students who remain missing.

Police estimated that there were up to 15 students on the boat before it sank. According to their preliminary investigations, the accident may have been the result of complacency or overcrowding. It is believed that the vessel was not carrying adequate floatation devices for its passengers.

“I call on the police and relevant authorities to continue the search for the victims of this tragedy, and urge them to support the families of the victims during this most difficult time,” said Hun Sen, in a social media post.
