Social media celeb gets bail in cosmetics case

Social media celebrity Chheng Sreyroth was granted bail by the Kandal Provincial Court yesterday after being arrested on Sunday for selling homemade cosmetics online.

Sreyroth, 33, from Takhmao district’s Doeum Mean commune, was arrested for selling and marketing her lotions and makeup under the name “Love Riya”, using Facebook and video live-streaming application Bigo Live, on which she had thousands of followers.

Bail was granted by Say Samphose Sery, investigating judge in the case, who also ordered her to check in monthly with the commune police station.

“Chheng Sreyroth . . . is put under court supervision. But she is ordered to show up at the court when there is a summons,” the judge’s statement reads.

She was charged on Monday for selling products that had been modified “through treatment or tampering” without permission or quality control and could face up to one year in prison and a fine of up to $2,500 if convicted.

But her arrest led to some backlash on social media, where users said police were treating her too harshly, with Oknha Duong Chay, a frequent Facebook user with nearly a million followers, protesting Sreyroth’s arrest.
