Local authorities reported that 82 houses in four communes of Banteay Meanchey province’s Svay Chek district were badly damaged by heavy rain and strong winds on the evening of April 17. No one was injured or killed in the incident.
District governor Loeung Sopheak told The Post on April 18 that he was currently supervising nearly 100 members of the district forces as they helped repair the damaged houses in Treas commune.
“This morning, our team collected a total of 978 damaged zinc roofing panels and beams and repaired the ones that could be reused. We have also supplied 1,000 new roofing panels to repair the houses that were extremely badly damaged, so that the families living there will have a safe place to stay,” he said.
Sopheak said the storms damaged 82 houses in total. Treas commune took the brunt of the damage, with 74 homes affected. Ta Phou and Sarung communes each had three homes damaged, while just two in Roluos commune needed repairs.
District police chief Chea Sloh told The Post that as of 11:30am on April 18, the district forces had repaired 15 houses.
Based on the size of his workforce – and the pace of the repairs carried out so far – he expected that 30 more homes would have been made livable by the end of the same day.
“If we cannot finish the work by the end of Monday [April 18], our teams will continue the repairs tomorrow. We will assist every victim of the storm, and their families ¬– regardless of party affiliation,” he added.
