The Disaster Management Commission in Stung Treng province has notified local authorities to be prepared to respond to flooding, while cautioning residents to remain vigilant.
In a September 30 notice, the commission said rising water levels in the Mekong and Sesan rivers over the past two days could lead to floods which could affect some communes and districts. In order to ensure their preparedness to respond and avoid serious consequences, local authorities at all levels should prepare resources and have practical plans for emergency intervention in place.
The notice said that at the same time, people living or conducting business along the rivers and in low-lying areas should be cautious and monitor the risk of flooding. Teams from the commission were standing by respond to any emergency and protect people's lives and property.
“If necessary, we will evacuate them to higher ground near their home. Appropriate locations have been designated by local authorities,” it added.
The announcement came following a September 29 notice from the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, which warned of possible flash floods.
