At least seven people in Takeo province’s Prey Kabbas district were injured on May 30 when their homes collapsed during a heavy rainstorm, which also ravaged 140 houses. A similar rainstorm also damaged 29 houses in Kampong Speu province’s Kong Pisei district on the same day.
In Takeo, Prey Kabbas district deputy police chief Ros Thet said heavy rain and strong winds had affected 162 houses, 22 of which had completely collapsed. Two children sustained severe injuries, while five others suffered minor wounds.
He said a two-year-old girl named Srey Sokna, who lives in Samrong Mreah village, had a leg broken when the columns of her house collapsed on her. She was taken to Kantha Bopha Children’s Hospital in Phnom Penh. Ten-year-old Hun Piseth, of Chroy village in the same district, received stitches to his head after being struck by a falling beam.
“According to Sokna’s family, she has been admitted, pending surgery on her broken leg,” he told The Post.
Thet added that on May 31, 50 members of the district police force had gone to the affected villages to begin repairs. He expected renovations to be complete by June 1.
In Kampong Speu province, Kong Pisei district police chief Khem Sophanra told The Post that strong winds on the afternoon of May 30 had damaged 29 houses and a car across five communes. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
