Thai talk: Junta chief to meet with Hun Sen

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha will meet with Prime Minster Hun Sen today in an effort to enhance “peace and prosperity” between the two countries.

Prayut’s visit to Cambodia comes amid rumours that Thailand’s ex-Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra fled the country via Cambodia last month ahead of a court verdict for her alleged role in a disastrous subsidy scheme.

But government spokesman Phay Siphan said yesterday that Yingluck is “not on the agenda” today. Cambodian officials have dismissed the rumours.

Nor will the two prime ministers discuss the issue of Cambodian migrant workers in Thailand, according to Siphan. Hundreds of thousands of undocumented Cambodian migrant workers are still waiting for legal documents to be processed so they can work in Thailand.

“Strengthening cooperation and the economy are the two most important [topics],” Siphan said.

According to a Foreign Ministry statement, the goal of the official visit is to “provide guidance and direction to further advance existing excellent and cooperative relations”.
