World Health Organisation (WHO) representative to Cambodia Li Ailan has reminded the public to consider the safety of the vulnerable when coming together during the festive period, in a Khmer New Year message.
Li said in her new year’s greetings that the public should consider the elderly, those with chronic diseases, health workers and pregnant women among them and to protect these groups by getting vaccinated and adhering to public health measures.
Li said that this Khmer New Year was particularly special, being the first celebration in more than two years of the Covid-19 pandemic.
She said she was excited to celebrate alongside Cambodians across the country and that she “fully understands” how important it is to be reunited with loved ones on such an important occasion.
“We should be united and enjoy the important celebration that is Khmer New Year, while being mindful of practicing Covid-19 safe measures to protect those we love. When joining family and friends, let’s remember those of us who are most vulnerable,” she tweeted.
“We all have these vulnerable groups in our families and communities, and it is up to us to protect them. We all know how to keep each other safe: your great efforts in getting fully vaccinated and practicing the ‘3 Dos and 3 Don’ts’ public health measures have paid off, and that is the major reason we are able to celebrate the Khmer New Year this year.”
