Hysa make lunge to collect fencing honours

As many as 59 fencers, including six women, were seen in action during the National Fencing Championship, which concluded at the Royal University of Phnom Penh on Wednesday, with the Hysa Club winning the coveted men’s epee team competition.

The three-day event, sponsored by the Post and Kraw Ma Co, involved the participation of five clubs, Hysa, Hosanna, Santhoumok, Norea and Samkay.

Popular Khmer language website Sabay.com.kh were the media partners for the championship.

In the keenly contested epee team event, Hysa, who sent out 17 participants in all, pegged back Santhoumok to grab the honours, with Norea Sport finishing third.

Hysa were well represented by San Seyha, Sam Sethpanha and Chay Sokleap. The second best team, Santhoumok, consisted of Khim Sammean, Keth Sisovanoudam and Sar Sovannary.

Third placed Norea were represented by Mealea Borin, Yhim Neak and Chhum Sambath.

In the men’s events, Chim Theara of Hosanna emerged as the winner in the individual foil event, fighting off a pair from Hysa Chay Sokleap and Chan Sokseyha to do so.

Santhoumok Club had its moment of glory when Khim Sammean topped the individual epee contest ahead of Mealea Borin of Norea Sport. San Sokseyha of Hysa filled in third.

Chhay LyLy of Hysa dominated the women’s individual epee, claiming the top spot at the expense of Moung Manut of Hosanna, with her teammate Suoung Pisey occupying third spot.
