A Preah Vihear military police officer filed a court complaint accusing hospital staff of murder after his wife died in hospital during a stillbirth.
Cheng Vey, 39, filed a complaint with the court on Tuesday against 16 Makara Referral Hospital’s maternity ward director and a midwife for negligence.
Vey said that his wife, 36-year-old Yun Thin, who was nine months' pregnant, had travelled to the referral hospital on February 22 after the baby died in utero.
At the hospital, he claims that medicine meant to speed up the passing of pregnancy tissue was not working and he requested an operation. When the staff refused, he demanded his wife be moved to the Kantha Bopha Hospital in Siem Reap but they declined. She bled to death.
Hospital director Kuong Lou, speaking on behalf of the accused, defended his staff. He said that they had followed the correct procedures but were unable to stop the blood loss.
He also said they had made the right decision in choosing not to operate nor to move her to Kantha Bopha, adding that the maternity ward had significant experience in dealing with similar cases.
