Minister of Interior Sar Kheng has instructed national and sub-national level officials to prepare for the third major event of the year, upcoming the 7th parliamentary elections, following the 32nd SEA Games and 12th ASEAN Para Games. The election is scheduled to be held in July.
Sar Kheng issued the order during last week’s inauguration of a new school facility at the Battambang branch of Preah Sihanouk Raja Buddhist University.
According to a social media release by the interior ministry, he also reminded officials that they are responsible for the safety and security of all domestic and international guests at this year’s sporting events, held for the first time in the Kingdom.
“You must all be ready to support another major event, the election of the 7th mandate of the National Assembly, which will take place on July 23,” said Sar Kheng.
“You have an important role to play. First, you must guarantee security and public order during the elections, to ensure that they are free and fair. You should also exercise your democratic right to participate in the selection of a new government,” he added.
He also noted the important role that Buddhism plays in Cambodian society, and its important contribution to the Kingdom’s development.
“Buddhism has played a very important role in developing Cambodia, and has taught us many important lessons. The government has always worked to develop the Kingdom’s infrastructure and give people the opportunity to acquire the knowledge they need to contribute to the growth of the nation,” he said.
“We must work together to maintain peace and political stability, forever. We must also defend social order and enhance our professional ethics and discipline, so we can contribute to the development of all sectors,” he added.
According to the National Election Committee (NEC), as of May 11, it had recognised 13 political parties, and registered their candidates.
The NEC said its specialised units are currently reviewing the applications of an additional seven parties.
