One of the quadruplets born last month in Preah Vihear province has died after battling an as-yet-unspecified illness for more than a week.
The mother of the two boys and two girls, Chhay Sopha, yesterday spoke of how her daughter appeared to have recovered after becoming seriously ill with vomiting and diarrhoea on August 5, but took a sudden turn for the worse and died on August 13 before doctors could save her.
“The doctors stopped giving serum to her because she looked better, but the next day, she began convulsing.
The doctors tried to help her, but they could not save her life,” she said.
According to Sopha, one of the two boys she gave birth to also became sick, but recovered and was discharged from hospital on Sunday.
Sopha is the first woman to have given birth to quadruplets since Cambodia began recording multiple births in 1999.
When the babies were born at Rovieng Health Center on July 14, they each weighed between 1.3kg and 2.2kg.
