Ramsar census carried out

A NatureLife Cambodia team conducted a census of the waterbird species that were foraging at the Boeng Tonle Chhmar Ramsar site in early May, according to a May 12 press release by the conservation NGO.

It explained that the Ramsar site’s Tonle Chhmar Lake is a source of food for thousands of waterbirds, especially from March until June, when the waters begin to recede.

“Species recorded included the black-tailed godwit, glossy ibis, black-head ibis, painted stork, Asian openbill, spot-billed duck and black-winged stilt. Our team also noted an increase in the number of people fishing on the lake,” it added.

Since 2021, NatureLife Cambodia has, with the financial assistance of the EU, supported park rangers and members of protected area communities with regular patrol activities in the Ramsar site. They are tasked with preventing natural resource crimes and monitoring the site’s biodiversity.
