Prime Minister Hun Sen announced that Cambodia is preparing to host the 5th Asian Youth Games (AYG) in 2029. The sporting event is described as even bigger than the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) and ASEAN Para Games. The hosting of this year’s games was crucial to developing the Kingdom’s capacity to host larger events.
Addressing the closing of the Para Games on the night of June 9 at Morodok Techno National Stadium, Hun Sen said: “We will meet here again in the Kingdom of Cambodia for an even larger sporting event in 2029.”
The prime minister praised the Cambodian ASEAN Para Games Organising Committee (CAMAPGOC), the Asian Paralympic Committee, and the sporting delegations from all of the participating countries, for coming together to promote the value of people with disabilities and their full support for Cambodia’s successful hosting of the games.
“As the hosts, we have done our best to make these Para Game events possible, by following the rule and standards of international Paralympic events. Now that the competition has come to an end, I hope that the 600 million people of ASEAN and Timor-Leste will have fond memories of Cambodia,” he said.
1,367 medals, including 475 gold, 448 silver, and 444 bronze were earned by the courageous athletes of the ASEAN region, in a series of events that held audiences in thrall. Indonesia and Thailand topped the medal table, with 401 and 329 medals respectively.
Cambodia claimed a total of 71 medals, including 9 gold, 18 silver and 44 bronze.
